de Toth, Andre (1910)
Director. Born (Mihaly Endre
Toth Sasvrai) and educated in Hungary where he learned his trade as actor, editor,
scenarist and assistant direc?tor, he was hired by Alexander Korda and followed
him to Hollywood in 1940. De Toth's American films are often stylishly
directed and expertly edited genre
pieces with an eye (he had only one eye) for bizarre details. Although
sometimes pushing style over the edge into flashiness as in the 3-D House of
Wax (1953), the bitter undertones of a disillusioned romanticism give an
extra edge to his lyrical treatment of landscape. He often worked with Randolph
Scott, includ?ing on Carson City and Man in the Saddle, but none
of the films quite matched the actor's work for Boetticher. However, the
austere Day 0/ the Outlaw and the disturbingly intense The Indian Fighter
are superior con?tributions to the genre.
