Ballard, Lucien (1908)
Cinematographer. Born in
Miami, Ballard became one of Hollywood's finest location photographers (though
he began his career working; pre?dominantly in the studio at Paramount with
Sternberg). His best work in the genre was for Sam Peckinpah, and to a lesser
extent Budd Boetticher.
His invaluable contri?bution to the Peckinpah canon can be
use?fully appraised by comparing his and John Coquillon's camerawork; whereas
the lat-ter's use of colour tends towards harsh and burnished tones (Pat
Qarrett and Billy the Kid), Ballard's tends towards warm autumnal ones.
