Brennan, Walter (1894-1974) ?Actor. Most moviegoers' persisting image of Brennan is that of the toothless old rummy of To Have and Have Not, asking passers-by whether the was ever stung by a dead bee. There was far more to the man than that engaging characterization. From 1927 he worked in B-Westerns, branched out in the 30s as a versatile character man, appeared in 1932 in a major Western, Law and Order, on what would become the familiar theme of cleaning up Tombstone, was one of the Three Godfathers in the 1936 version, and then won three Oscars for Best Supporting Actor in five years - one of them for his portrayal of the ruthless Judge Roy Bean in The Westerner. And Red River and Rio Bravo were still to come.
