Brown, Harry (1917-86)
?The novelist and poet Harry Brown wrote largely of War and the West. He made his name with the novel A Walk in the Sun, based on his war service in Italy and filmed by Lewis Milestone. He collaborated on the scripts of four West?erns, but two others drawn from his novels were far more important. Val Lewton's last film, Apache Drums, came from Brown's Stand at Spanish Boot, while Hawks' marvel?lous El Dorado was based on Brown's The Stars in Their Courses. That film perfectly catches the sad, stoical tone of Brown's best writing.
