Brown, Harry Joe (1892-1972)
?Director, producer. Trained as a lawyer, Brown first made? his? mark? in? cinema? as? production manager for the short-lived? Western star Fred Thomson, whose first two films he also directed in 1924. In 1926 he became associ?ate producer on the Ken Maynard series at First National (later at Universal), a number of which he directed himself. Abandoning direction, he became a jack-of-all-trades pro?ducer during the 30s, first at RKO-Pathe, then Fox, returning to the Western as associate producer to Fritz Lang on Western Union. Struck?? by?? Randolph? Scott's authoritative Western persona. Brown worked with the actor again on The Desperadoes, The Qun-fighters and Coroner Creek, and in 1948 set up a production company in partnership with him.?The??? culmination??? of??? their ???efforts together was the very? fine series starring Scott and directed by Budd Boetticher that ran from Seven Men from Now (the only one not?? produced?? by?? Brown)?? to?? Comanche Station.?? Although? Brown? worked? almost exclusively within the B-Western, his output richly deserves the term 'superior'.
