Buttolph, David (1902)
Composer. But-tolph reached
Hollywood in the mid-30S. He had studied music in New York and Vienna,
worked in night clubs in Vienna and Munich, and coached opera in Munich. He became music director at Fox
and later at Warners, and from 1940 onwards com?posed scores for over 100 films. John
Ford's The Horse Soldiers is an excellent example of his work. Buttolph
weaves the lively and the sombre,
marching music and Stan Jones'
cavalry songs, into a pattern which illumi?nates but never intrudes, ju As
